Quality insistedAn overall marketing distribution strategy and reformation of the import and export mechanism injected a new dimension into Taiwan’s agriculture

What is the international cold chain?

Cold chain is used for the preservation of the quality of the products throughout the processes of harvesting, packaging, storage, transportation and sales. The method keeps the product at a predetermined low temperature to maintain quality and reduce damage to agricultural products.

Ordinary farming groups are unable to afford due to the investment in multiple resources

Cold chain logistics is the most important part of the postharvest process in fruits and vegetables.

However, farming groups, in general, cannot afford such method alone due to the need for capital investments and on-site planning. As a result, products are usually delivered with defects. International cold chain logistics are associated with the flights, airport facilities and the infrastructure in the target country, etc.

Quality maintenance by precooling to slow down crop respiration. Pre-cooling methods affect the quality

Regarding fruits and vegetables, pre-cooling is one of the keys to postharvest preservation. The pre-cooling process is just for a short period of time to remove the remaining heat during the harvest in the field. Temperature is lowered down to a predetermined degree to detain crop respiration and avoid putrefaction. In this way, the original freshness and flavor can be preserved. Also, the time for storage is extended and the overall cooling load is reduced, while the shelf life span is increased.
HOOR (Hours out of the refrigerator) is one of the key items to be observed. It refers to the time needed after harvest to get the crops into the predetermined temperature for preservation. The crux of the international cold chain lies in whether such temperature can be maintained during transit in international trade.

Improper pre-cooling equipment and manual stacking lead to temperature dissipation and inconsistency of temperature.

At present, the dissipation and the inconsistency of temperature in the refrigerators are common domestic shortcomings, due to the lack of the proper pre-cooling equipment and refrigerators used in the transportation process. In Taiwan, postharvest packaging is usually neglected, therefore the losses are high. If every process can be controlled accordingly, then damage would certainly decrease. Proper packaging and storage will reduce the losses, while maintaining freshness at the same time.

Insufficient national equipment leads to a “broken chain”, such as the case of the poor design of the air conditioning at the airport. The improvement of the domestic cold chain logistics depends on grasping all of the details in all the processes, and the investment in early stage pre-cooling. Regarding the establishment of national cold chain logistics, it requires the government to take notice of the planning of proper airport equipment so Taiwan would not be one of the nightmares for the air cargo of agriculture products.

responsibilityExpansion in emerging export markets

After the establishment of Mitagri, it shouldered the three core tasks of "the import and export of the agricultural products", "the export of technologies" and "the overseas investment and export of the materials". Among them, "the expansion in emerging export markets" is an important issue that the COA entrusts to the new company. In the future, Mitagri will combine the strength of all parties to establish a demonstration of a value-added agriculture mechanism in Taiwan. At the same time, it will establish a complete domestic and international sales pipeline and reform the normal mechanism of import and export operation for the agricultural products. With a steady pace, we will gradually inject a new dimension into Taiwan's agriculture.
